Now that I’m an enrolled Medi-Cal doula provider, I’ve heard a lot of the same questions from families. Here are the answers.
What does it mean that you’re a Medi-Cal doula provider?
I am officially enrolled with the California Department of Health Care Services (DHCS) as a Medi-Cal doula provider. This means Medi-Cal covers doula services such as prenatal visits, labor support, postpartum care, and lactation guidance.
Can I start services now if I have Medi-Cal?
Yes. Families with Medi-Cal can begin services right away. My managed care plan credentialing (Kaiser, Health Plan of San Joaquin, etc.) is currently in progress, and I will submit claims as soon as each plan activates my provider status.
Will I have to pay out of pocket?
Most families with Medi-Cal pay nothing for doula care. If your plan requires pre-authorization, I will help you navigate that process.
What services does Medi-Cal cover?
Medi-Cal covers:
- Prenatal doula visits
- Continuous labor support
- Postpartum doula visits
- Lactation support
- Education, advocacy, and emotional support
- Help understanding newborn cues and postpartum recovery
What if my managed care plan hasn’t activated you yet?
You can still begin services. Claims will be submitted once your plan completes my credentialing. This is a normal part of the Medi-Cal onboarding process for doulas.
Can you help me check my Medi-Cal benefits?
Yes. I can help you verify your coverage and guide you through any steps needed to start services.
Do I need a referral?
Most families do not need a referral. If your plan requires one, I’ll help you get it.
How do I get started?
Send me a message or fill out my intake form. We’ll schedule a warm, supportive consultation to talk about your pregnancy, your goals, and how doula care can help you feel confident and supported.
