Expert Postpartum Care From a Registered Nurse

At Home Where You Need it Most

My Story might not be the typical nurse’s journey. It began in the heart of labor and delivery units, surrounded by the awe-inspiring energy of new life. But amidst the joy, I saw a gap – a time after birth where mothers and newborns often felt adrift, navigating uncharted waters until that six-week checkup.

This “fourth trimester,” as it’s called, is a whirlwind of emotions and physical changes. It’s a time when you might be feeling overwhelmed by breastfeeding, struggling with recovery, or simply needing a listening ear. That’s where I come in.

Valerie Claxton RN, Doula, Your Postpartum Partner, was born out of a deep desire to bridge that gap. I offer education, encouragement, and a whole lot of love. From helping you navigate the world of breastfeeding to managing postpartum recovery, I’m here to guide you and your tiny miracle on this exciting adventure.

My mission is to make sure that every mother, father, and baby triad receives the love, support, education, care, information, and answers they deserve before, during, and after birth. (newborn care, breastfeeding, body mechanics for laboring, and recovery from vaginal or operative delivery)

A Bit About My Path

My journey to becoming your postpartum advocate wasn’t always smooth sailing. Facing down doubts and stereotypes only fueled my fire to succeed. Remember that professor who told me I “wouldn’t make it” because I was black and female? Well, his words became the spark that ignited my passion.

I graduated from Compton College and then the University of California, Irvine, with a Bachelors and Master of Science in Arts (believe it or not) specializing in Stage Management! But the world of medicine called, and I dove headfirst into nursing school at night while working full-time.

My clinical experience spanned medical-surgical units and labor and delivery, giving me a well-rounded perspective on healthcare. Eventually, my wings unfurled, and I became a travel nurse, witnessing the wonders of new life unfold across the country.

Finally, California called me home. Back in the rhythm of labor and delivery, the forgotten period – the fourth trimester – continued to tug at my heart.
